Christmas in Kansas City

We are just 20 days away from it being Christmas! Kansas City does a great job every year with all the fun events for the season. Whether you’re looking for something to do with the family, date night, or a night out with your friends, we have compiled a list of some of the best things to do for the holiday.

Crown Center Ice Terrace

One of the best ice skating rinks in the country sits right in Crown Center. Open until March, skate rentals are just $5, season passes $120 and they even offer skate sharpening for $10. The rink is open Sunday-Thursday 10am-9pm, Friday-Saturday 10am-11pm. The Ice Terrace even offers lessons if you do not know how to skate. If your office is looking for a fun activity to do this season, they take private parties!

Conductor Club at Union Station

Visit the Conductor Club this Holiday Season as they pay homage to the Grinch with this theme. The, The, The, THE GRINCH will be immersed into the space as they bring the books, movies, and songs to life! Make sure to make your reservation beforehand and enjoy their Christmas themed cocktails.

The Kansas City Ballet Performing The Nutcracker

A tradition for many years, The Kansas City Ballet performs The Nutcracker December 7-24 at the Kauffman Center of Performing Arts. Tickets start at $34 for adults. This event is great for the whole family to enjoy. Don’t miss out on one of the Ballet’s greatest performances!

The Country Club Plaza Lights

The lights were turned on November 24th per tradition and will stay on through the holiday. Some fun facts about the event:

  • Tower lights are always one color. For example, The Time Tower, at Broadway and Ward Parkway, is always red.
  • The lights don’t stay up all year long. The hard-working crew from Capital Electric begin hanging the lights in August and take them back down starting in mid-January through the beginning of March.
  • The big switch on the stage at the Plaza Lighting Ceremony really does turn on all the lights.
  • The child selected to help turn on the lights from the audience is always chosen at random.

Take a walk around the plaza, go out to dinner and enjoy these beautiful lights!

Agent Spotlight: Daniel Murphy

Who is Brookside Real Estate Agent Daniel Murphy? He may be one of our newer agents to have joined the Brookside Real Estate team, but he’s a “Brooksider for Life!” Daniel worked at Meiner’s Grocery Store (now currently Jimmy John’s and Mike’s) for 16 years. He eventually decided to make a career change and started working for Schloegel Contracting in KC. That’s when Dan found his passion for remodeling homes and spent 24 years as a handyman for mostly Brookside and Waldo homes.

After years of working on everything from simple repairs to complete kitchen and bathroom renovations, Daniel decided that “swinging a hammer” everyday was taking a toll on his body, and joining Brookside Real Estate Company as an agent just made sense.

“Having worked on older homes for over 20 years, I possess a knowledge of not only how things work, but also, what my buyers can do to homes they are considering. Also, what my sellers can do to make their homes more appealing to the buying community,” said Daniel. “I have a vast list of skilled trusted vendors I’ve worked with while remodeling homes that I can share with both my buyers and sellers!”

Daniel continues, “This is a “tool” or perspective not many other agents possess and I’m happy to share with my clients and look out for their best interests.”

Daniel continues to bump into friends daily that he either met at the Meiner’s grocery store or have worked on their homes. So, next time you see Daniel around Brookside – be sure to say “Hi!” He always enjoys catching up with neighbors and friends! Daniel is proud to call Brookside his home and he’s ready to help you navigate through all of the ins and outs of real estate. Call Brookside Real Estate and ask for Daniel, or check him out on our website. We promise, he will indeed exceed your expectations!

5 Tips For Spring Home Maintenance

Spring is the perfect opportunity to turn your attention to those at-home projects you’ve been meaning to get to! Involve your kids in your home projects for some family fun or do it yourself for a little productive alone time! However you want to go about it, spring cleaning is just around the corner, and Brookside Real Estate Company has some tips for how to get your home spring ready!

  1. Clean your gutters. Keeping your gutters clean prevents mold growth, avoids pest infestations, and helps your gutters work properly. Moisture in your gutters can cause wood rot as well as mold. To keep your roof in perfect condition, make sure to clean out your gutters often.
  2. Service your HVAC unit. When that hot summer weather hits Kansas City, the last thing you want is for your air conditioning to suddenly not work. Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit to clean coils, drain pans, change interior filters, and keep your air conditioning system working at peak performance level.
  3. Examine your chimney. Those chilly Kansas City winter months likely had you running your fireplace all winter long. Getting your fireplace cleaned in springtime will help to eliminate fireplace smells, which get much worse, the warmer the weather is. A thoroughly cleaned and swept flue and fireplace make for a cleaner, fresher-smelling home. Plus, your fireplace is ready to go come fall!
  4. Inspect exterior siding and paint. Wind, freezing temperatures and moisture can take a toll on the exterior of your home during the cold winter months. Make sure to replace any cracked or peeling wood on your home before the spring rain arrives in Kansas City.
  5. Make sure Smoke and co2 (carbon monoxide) detectors are working properly. Spring is a great time to make sure these detectors are working properly. If your alarm sounds once you push the test button, you’re good to go! If the alarm doesn’t sound while pushing the button, you may need to replace the batteries or the alarm itself.

Whether you’re looking to sell your house and start a new chapter or whether you’re developing the home of your dreams, Brookside Real Estate Company is dedicated to guide you on your home-owning journey. Give us a call at (816) 333-3330 or stop by our storefront office at 9 W 63rd Street – when the flag is up, we’re open!
